A Quick Study

It’s always exciting to learn something new as an artist. Yesterday I received a delivery of a new water-based cold wax medium, which can be used with acrylic – unlike traditional cold wax which is compatible with oils.

I couldn’t wait to start experimenting, so I set to work creating a new version of this favourite scene which I’d already painted in late 2022. It’s been quite some time since I started and finished a painting within a few hours, and it was such a refreshing experience. I’m glad it came out differently from the other painting too.

Anyway, the image below shows the areas where I applied the wax medium (mixed into the paint) … look at that gorgeous texture on the tree trunks. I’m sure there are plenty of ways of other ways it can be used besides texture, and I can’t wait to explore the possibilities.

“Isaacs Pines Study” is acrylic/gouache/acrylic ink with cold wax medium and posca marker on acid free Reeves 360gsm A3 paper.
