This was a commission for a friend in the Americas, a favourite view in their home of the sunset shining down the hallway. I’m normally wary of taking on commissions, as there’s significant risk involved and it can place real constraints on creativity, but I loved the reference photos and realised it was a scene I wanted to try to capture, with the play of light on the floor, the interesting and unusual architecture, the shadows gathering in the bedroom but light reflecting in the mirror.
I hadn’t painted a work with so many straight edges before, and found it quite complex and time consuming, but I was in a resting period between producing works for galleries so I was happy to take my time with it.
Fortunately my friend was overjoyed with the result, and the painting is crossing the Pacific as I write this, but had they not been I’d have gladly kept this on my own wall.
“Shadows dance, last light lingers” is acrylic, acrylic ink and cold wax medium on 61x76cm birch panel.
